When to seek an assessment

In the absence of a known risk factor, evaluation is usually considered after 12 months of trying when the woman is under 35, or after 6 months from age 35. Earlier assessment may be appropriate after 40 or when there are irregular periods, suspected endometriosis, known tubal problems or a possible male factor.

Understanding the couple’s history

Fertility assessment considers both partners when applicable. The doctor reviews how long you have been trying, menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies, medical history and any tests already performed. The aim is to identify which investigations would help in your situation, without treating a single test result as a diagnosis.

Bring semen analysis results, hormone tests, ultrasound reports, operative reports and records of any previous fertility treatment. It is useful to note the dates of tests because some results depend on timing within the menstrual cycle.

From investigation to a treatment plan

The consultation may lead to an individualized plan involving ultrasound, ovulation assessment, examination of the uterine cavity or tubal testing when indicated. Dr Abbou discusses the findings and possible management, including ovulation treatment or a pathway toward assisted reproduction where appropriate.

A fertility consultation does not automatically mean IVF. If treatment requires a specialized facility, its location and practical arrangements are clarified separately. No test or treatment can guarantee a pregnancy.

Your questions, answered

Should both partners be assessed?

When applicable, yes. Fertility difficulties may involve either partner or both, and assessment is usually coordinated rather than focusing only on the woman.

Should I wait a year if my periods are very irregular?

Not necessarily. Irregular or absent periods and known fertility risk factors can justify an earlier consultation.

Does booking mean I will start IVF?

No. The appointment is an assessment and discussion of appropriate options. Treatment depends on the results, your history and your circumstances.
